Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 30. The BJP leader shared a photo of a meeting on X (formerly Twitter) between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, stating that the tribal leader will officially join the BJP in Ranchi on Friday.

"Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a distinguished Adivasi leader of our country, @ChampaiSorenJi met Hon’ble Union Home Minister @AmitShahJi a short while ago. He will officially join the @BJP4India on 30th August in Ranchi,” Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X.

Speculation about Champai Sorens political shift had been growing since August 18, when he visited Delhi with several MLAs, raising questions about his future with the JMM. Champai Soren also expressed his frustration on social media, stating that he was "pained" by the actions of his own party members after his programs were abruptly cancelled and he was asked to resign as Chief Minister.

Champai Soren had taken over as Chief Minister after Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. However, Champai Soren stepped down on July 3, after Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, a move that reportedly left Champai Soren feeling "insulted."

After considering his options of retiring from politics, forming a new party or joining another political party Champai Soren ruled out retirement on August 21, hinting at either strengthening a new organization or allying with another political entity.

Reports suggest that the BJP may offer Champai Soren a constitutional post and secure a favourable assembly seat for his son. However, this move could cause internal tensions within the BJP, particularly in the Seraikela constituency, which Soren currently represents, and where his influence could impact local political dynamics.
