Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), an engineering services company, is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of a metro rail project to connect Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula in Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR). The metro project aims to cater for the increasing population and transport demand of the Tricity.
Meanwhile, RITES has published a Traffic and System Selection Report for the project to study the transportation system of Tricity, which stated that a metro network in Tricity is required as the population of the region is estimated to be about 48 lakh by 2053.
The RITES' Traffic and System Selection Report revealed that most of the people in Tricity use cars and buses for daily commute. Out of the 10.21 lakh people who travel by some mode of transport, 5.33 lakh use cars and taxis and 2.06 lakh use buses. The report stated that the travellers include 59.5 per cent self-employed commuters, 18.5 per cent business travellers, 3.1 per cent education and 4.4 per cent tourists.

Bus travel is a popular choice among the people, with the highest number of 71,451 people using the Sector-43 ISBT, followed by 55,611 people using the ISBT-17 and 12,702 people using the ISBT Panchkula, the report said.
Analysing the transportation system of Tricity, the RITES report concluded that the metro operation will reduce the traffic congestion on the roads of Tricity, which is a major problem for the residents.
