Police have requested residents to plan their travel in advance and follow real-time updates until normal traffic movement is restored.
The traffic restrictions were imposed after large-scale demonstrations erupted at Panjab University on November 10. The protests, which saw brief clashes between police and demonstrators, were organised to demand immediate senate elections — pending since the end of the previous term in 2024.

Protesters, including student groups, Sikh organisations and farmer unions, gathered outside the university’s gates and near the vice-chancellor’s office, calling for the institution’s autonomy to be protected. Heavy police deployment, nearly 2,000 personnel and multiple checkpoints, led to traffic disruptions, particularly around the Zirakpur-Chandigarh highway and Mohali border.
The agitation began after the Centre’s proposal to amend the Panjab University Act, which sought to reduce the size of the senate and replace elections with nominations. Although the Centre later withdrew the notification, protesters have continued to demand that the university’s senate elections be conducted without further delay.
