Newspaper supplies were disrupted across several parts of Punjab on Sunday morning after local police stopped vehicles carrying them at multiple checkpoints. Papers that were scheduled to reach homes by 6 AM had still not arrived even by 9 AM.

According to Jagran.com, the police blockade was levied across districts like Moga, Ferozepur, Nangal, Mansa, Barnala, and others. The news of the police action has spread like wildfire on social media, with many comparing this act of the police to the days when terrorism was at its peak in the state.

The Punjab Police has so far failed to provide any clarification as to why these checkpoints were in place across the city.

Responding to the police blockade, Parghat Singh, Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, “The Bhagwant Mann government has blocked newspaper supplies solely to prevent news from reaching the public about party supremo Arvind Kejriwal's stay at Bungalow No. 50 in Chandigarh. The Delhi lobby is looting Punjab's treasury.”

The Congress MLA further leveled serious allegations against Bhagwant Mann’s AAP government, describing the current governance in the state as akin to an “emergency-like” situation. Meanwhile, as the day progressed, the issue of the late delivery of newspapers dominated social media. People began posting on social media about the issue.

State Vice-President of BJP, Punjab, Dr Subhash Sharma, termed this act a ‘death’ of democracy. “Chief Ministers Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal often speak about democracy, but the reality is that they do not care about it at all. During the days of terrorism, it was heard that newspaper deliveries were stopped. Today, the Aam Aadmi Party government has reminded people of those very days,” he added, quoted Jagran.com.

DGP, Law and Order, Arpit Shukla, said that the checkpoints were put in place based on the inputs provided by the intelligence wing.
