In a joint operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation and Chapra police arrested Rajkumar Singh, the alleged main shooter involved in the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant (PA) of Suvendu Adhikari, from UP's Muzaffarnagar.
The CBI produced the accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, from where he was taken on transit remand.
Rajkumar Singh is a resident of Ratopur village in the Rasra area in Ballia. Earlier, Raj Singh, a resident of Anand Nagar, had also been arrested in connection with the case. Rajkumar Singh is accused of involvement in several previous criminal cases.
Rajkumar’s father, Tribhuvan Narayan Singh, said that on Sunday, around 1:30 pm, some plainclothes officers arrived in two vehicles and inquired about his son. Speaking outside his house at 8 pm on Monday, Tribhuvan said he had no idea what his son had done.
According to his father, Rajkumar had been visiting the police station for a character certificate, but it was rejected because of an old dispute. Rajkumar Singh is accused of assaulting and injuring former pradhan candidate Arvind Kharwar alias Munna in Ratopur on October 8, 2020. He is also accused of opening fire on October 13, 2020, in which Arvind narrowly escaped. A case in this regard was registered at Rasra Kotwali police station.
Apart from this, Rajkumar was also accused in 2023 of assaulting Sanjay Bharti, a resident of Ratopur, over a drain dispute, which reportedly led to the rejection of his character certificate.
Rajkumar Singh’s grandfather, Anirudh Singh, is a retired teacher. His father, Tribhuvan, earlier worked in a private job in Ayodhya and is currently at home. Tribhuvan said that at 6:45 am on Monday, he received a call from the CBI office informing him that his son had been arrested and would soon be produced before a Kolkata court.
According to the family, 21-year-old Rajkumar Singh is unmarried. Five members live in the family. His elder sister and younger brother Rajneesh, are studying, while his mother, Sarita Singh, is a homemaker. Police Inspector Yogendra Narayan Singh said he had no information regarding Rajkumar Singh.
