Former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday said Centre’s NSA on Khalistani Sympathiser Amritpal Singh was a form of Emergency as the latter, being a Member of Parliament, couldn’t raise the concerns of the people of his constituency in Lok Sabha.

Citing several instances in the BJP government as an ‘undeclared emergency’ in the country, Channi, without naming Singh, said a person who was chosen by 20 lakh people of Punjab was behind bars in NSA charges.

"They speak about Emergency every day. But what about the undeclared Emergency in the country today?... This too is an Emergency that a man who was elected as an MP by 20 lakh people in Punjab is behind bars under the NSA. He is unable to present the views of the people of his constituency, here. This too is an Emergency," Channi said in Lok Sabha.

Participating in a debate on a discussion on the Union Budget, the Congress leader raised the issue of famous Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala’s assassination, calling it yet another testament of ‘emergency’. “Famous Punjabi singer was gunned down. His family is roaming around seeking justice but they have been denied one. This is also a form of emergency,” he said.

Meanwhile, a heated argument was witnessed between Channi and MoS Railways Ravneet Bittu, who abandoned Congress during the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, in Lok Sabha. When Channi rebuked Bittu for joining Congress, the former Ludhiana MP strongly reacted and tore into the former over the issue of corruption and his alleged naming in the ‘Me Too’ movement.
