Chennai News: To improve last-mile connectivity in urban and suburban areas, the Tamil Nadu government has launched new private mini-bus services under its updated transport scheme. On Monday, Health Minister Ma Subramanian flagged off 11 such services at the Transport Commissioner’s Office in Guindy, Chennai. The rollout follows Chief Minister MK Stalin’s formal launch of the scheme in Thanjavur earlier the same day.

Chennai Mini-Bus New 11 Routes

According to a DT Next report, in the first phase of operations in Chennai, mini-buses will run on 11 routes. Although 72 routes have been sanctioned for the city, only a few have been launched for now. Among the new routes are Chettiyar Agaram to Alwarthirunagar Market, Kovilambakkam to Kamakshi Hospital, Sholinganallur to Thoraipakkam and Valasaravakkam’s Lamech School to Meenakshi Government Hospital in Maduravoyal.

Across Tamil Nadu, the Transport Department has identified 2,857 mini-bus routes. These include 2,010 new routes and 847 routes that will replace or migrate from older ones. The department invited public applications for these routes and issued permits after proper verification.

In Chennai, these mini-buses will operate only outside the core city zone but within the Corporation limits. A senior official stated that more services will be added gradually as applicants complete the formalities and provide vehicles that meet permit requirements.

Officials said the scheme would help people living in underconnected localities by offering affordable and dependable transport. It is expected to reduce dependence on private vehicles and improve access to healthcare, schools, and workplaces.

Dignitaries present at the launch included Chennai Mayor R Priya and Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade.
