The Greater Chennai Police said it has initiated an inquiry against the Sub Inspector who, as per a video clip, forcibly confiscated the national flag from a group of spectators who had arrived at the MA Chidambaram stadium for the group stage Cricket World Cup match between Afghanistan and Pakistan that took place on Monday.
Police authorities claimed that the incident at Chepauk stadium was an isolated one and assured action against the personnel in question.
"The incident of Chennai Police snatched the Indian flag during Afghanistan vs Pakistan match in Chennai Chepauk stadium has been brought to notice. An inquiry has been initiated against the SI concerned deployed for bandobust duty at MAC Stadium. He was recalled to the Control Room. Appropriate action as per law will be taken based on the findings," police said.
"Apart from this solitary incident, no other was reported. It is observed that many spectators are freely carrying and displaying the Indian tri-colour inside the stadium," it added.
After news reports of the incident emerged, the Bharatiya Janata Party launched an all-out attack against Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister MK Stalin, his party, the DMK, and the newly formed INDIA Opposition alliance.
The BJP accused the state government of banning spectators from carrying the tricolour inside Chepauk in order to not provoke fans of Pakistani fans.

"Though they’ve failed miserably in this misadventure, the DMK Govt today stooped to an all-new low by banning entry to our Country’s Tricolour inside the Chepauk stadium," BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai posted on X.
"They hate everything about this great nation, from Sanatana Dharma to our sovereignty and wish to remain a parrot of our coloniser," the BJP leader said referring to DMK scion and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's controversial 'Eradicate Sanatana Dharma' remarks.
