A video journalist, O Pratheep Kumar, who supported himself by working as a Rapido bike taxi rider, was killed late Tuesday night when his motorcycle was slammed by a speeding BMW on the Maduravoyal-Tambaram elevated bypass road.
The accident occurred when the luxury vehicle allegedly collided with Kumar's motorcycle with such force that his body was ejected nearly 100 meters from the point of collision.
Police later discovered his body on a lower section of the road.
Police authorities say Kumar, who lived in Chennai near Pondy Bazaar, worked for a Telugu news channel and was lately linked to a Telugu YouTube channel.
Additionally, his ID cards were discovered at the scene. Despite his media career, one of the video journalists who knew Kumar personally claimed that he worked as a bike taxi driver in his spare time to pay his bills.
After the collision, the BMW driver allegedly left the car at the scene of the accident. According to preliminary findings, the driver may have been forced to leave the car after the incident because the autonomous sensor system may have forced the vehicle to stop.
Commuters noticed the wrecked bike and abandoned car nearby and contacted authorities, sparking a search that led to the discovery of Kumar's body. Police sources say they had yet to apprehend the BMW driver.
