Chennai Metro Update: In a major update for the Chennai commuters, the operation on the first stretch of the second phase project from Poonamallee to Porur is likely to begin in January 2026. While the operation was set to begin by the end of 2025, it got delayed due to the technical and operational reasons. While providing details, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) stated that the construction and trial works are expected to be completed in the upcoming weeks. It further stated that the metro route will provide relief to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion.

While providing details, the officials stated that the project got delayed due to several factors, including issues in the completion of some entry points and delays in receiving clearances. The further clarified that the authority is yet to receive mandatory approvals from the Railway Board. “We have escalated the issue to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. We expect that the (Railway) board will provide the signalling approval and release the RDSO speed certificate by December 8 or December 9,” a CMRL official was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

However, the authority asserted that 90 per cent of the construction work is already finished, adding that the remaining work is likely to be finished before the end of this year. “Over 93 per cent of the construction work between Poonamallee and Porur has been completed. We have mobilised a huge manpower and will definitely complete the construction before the end of December,” another official asserted.

Ahead of the inauguration of the much-awaited route, the CMRL will also have to take permission from the state and central government. Earlier in November, the CMRL had emphasised that several expansion projects are likely to be announced in the upcoming months to boost the regional connectivity.
