Chennai Metro Update: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is reportedly planning to operate trains at an interval of six minutes during the peak hours on the much-awaited Poonamallee–Porur stretch. The authority stated that the operation is likely to begin in January 2026, adding that it will significantly boost the regional connectivity. The expansion of metro services is likely to provide convenience to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion. The officials stated that the operators are being trained and the trial runs have commenced to ensure that the operation on the much-awaited corridor begins in January.
While providing details, the CMRL officials stated that the frequency on the metro line will be six minutes to ensure convenience to the commuters, reported The Hindu. They further stated that the construction work is likely to be finished by the end of December. “Over 93 per cent of the construction work between Poonamallee and Porur has been completed. We have mobilised a huge manpower and will definitely complete the construction before the end of December,” one of the CMRL officials was quoted as saying by TH.

They further stated that the commuters will be able to arrive at the platforms quickly, as the stations will be compact, adding that they can continue to use the QR tickets. “Unlike the huge phase I stations, these stations will be compact, allowing commuters to reach the platforms quickly. As in the Phase I network, the commuters can continue using the National Common Mobility Cards and the QR Code tickets," another official stated.
"The stations on the Poonamallee-Porur stretch will also feature half-height platform screen doors, which were not available in the phase I network. These protective barriers have now been introduced on the elevated stretches of the phase II network to enhance safety,” he added.

Earlier in November, the CMRL had emphasised that several expansion projects are likely to be announced in the upcoming months to boost the regional connectivity.
