Chennai Metro Update: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Saturday announced that the construction of the 9-km viaduct between Poonamallee and Porur has been completed. While defining the development as significant, the authorities stated that the crucial part for the second phase has been completed after nearly three and a half years. They further stated that the construction of the viaduct will give a major boost to the infrastructure of the city.
The authorities stated that the last 624th U-girder was placed at the Kumananchavadi Metro station in the early hours of March 8, adding that for now it is under construction. A U-girder is a precast segment used in the construction of a viaduct.
The CMRL officials stated that the total cost of the second phase is around Rs 63,246 crore, adding that the operation of metro trains will initially start between Poonamallee and Porur on a part of corridor 4. The officials further stated that construction of the viaduct is important as a trial run of the metro had already been planned for the later part of the month.
“While the viaduct was completed easily in other sections, we had to create a facility to construct a grade separator in the future and massively increase the height of the viaduct at Kumananchavadi and Karayanchavadi. From the ramp near Pooonamallee Bypass Metro, the viaduct starts rising gradually. In most of the stations on the corridor, the viaduct’s height ranges between 12-18 m, depending on the gradient. The viaduct stands the tallest at 25 m at the Kumananchavadi and Karayanchavadi Metros. These sections were very tough to build,” Projects Director of CMRL, T Archunan was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
He further stated that the Poonamallee-Porur part was not as complicated as the Porur-Kodamabakkam part, as it included a double-decker section. However, he emphasised that the construction of the Kumanchavadi and Karayanchavadi Metro stations was full of challenges.
“We had to bring in two 500-tonne cranes to lift the U-girders at night to construct the viaduct between the two stations. The foundation also had to be built accordingly. While the foundation’s depth at other locations is about 25 m, its depth between the Kumananchavadi and Karayanchavadi stations is around 40 m,” Archunan added. The officials have also assured that the construction of metro stations is in progress.
