Chennai Metro Update: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is reportedly soon likely to complete a six-kilometer stretch between Vadapalani and Poonamallee depot under Phase II. As per the CMRL officials, the authority is planning to conduct trial runs by mid-January. The officials stated that nearly 4,000 workers have been deployed for the construction work, adding that the stretch will be available for commercial use by the end of January or the first week of February. Earlier last week, the CMRL had stated that the stretch will benefit hundreds of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion.
While providing details, CMRL director MA Siddique stated that thousands of workers have been deployed at the site to ensure the project is completed ahead of the deadline, reported the New Indian Express. He stated that while over 3,000 workers are engaged in deck slab construction, 600 workers are laying the track. He also assured that the stretch is likely to be available for the public use by the first week of February after all the key trial runs.
“With a target to complete works ahead of trial runs, we are leaving no stone unturned,” Siddique was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express. “On average, around 300 metres of track are being laid every day,” he added. While the Chennai metro had the deadline to complete the work by December 2025, the project got delayed due to pending certificates from the Railway Design.

Earlier on December 29, the CMRL officials stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery line is likely to be finalised by January 15. They further stated that the project will provide a significant boost to the regional connectivity, as its total length will be over 21 kilometers and will connect 19 metro stations.
