Chennai Metro Update: In a major update for the commuters, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is reportedly planning to launch passenger service between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani in February. Earlier in December 2025, the authority announced that while the service up to Porur Junction will begin by the end of January, it will be extended later to Vadapalani. The CMRL has stated that the corridor will significantly boost the regional connectivity, adding that it will provide convenience by cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion. It further assured that the trail runs are being conducted and the operation is set to begin shortly.
While providing details, the authority stated that the commuters will get connectivity with the Phase 1 network, reported The Hindu. The CMRL asserted that the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has already conducted first round of inspections. The authority further stated that trial runs will be conducted till Vadapalani on January 9 if the city does not witness any rain.

“If the rain doesn’t hamper the work and trial run, we plan to commence from next Friday,” an official was quoted as saying by The Hindu. They further stated that Phase II passengers will temporarily use the Phase I station for entry and exit at Vadapalani station. While providing details, the officials stated that track laying work is remaining between Porur Junction and Vadapalani.
“Nearly 2 km of track has to be laid… We want to complete the work at least on the downward line by January 9 and begin the trial run,” a source was quoted as saying by Swarajya. Apart from this, the CMRL is soon likely to complete a six-kilometer stretch between Vadapalani and Poonamallee depot under Phase II.
As per the CMRL officials, the authority is planning to conduct trial runs by mid-January. The officials stated that nearly 4,000 workers have been deployed for the construction work, adding that the stretch will be available for commercial use by the end of January or the first week of February.
