Chennai News: A 65-year-old man died after being hit by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus that went out of control in Chennai on Sunday morning. The accident also claimed the life of the bus driver, who reportedly suffered a heart attack while driving.
The incident took place around 6 AM as the MTC bus, operating on route 70C between Koyambedu and Tambaram, was travelling from the Vedapalani depot to the CMBT depot. According to The Times of India, the bus was empty at the time and nearing a hotel when the driver collapsed on the steering wheel.
With the driver unconscious, the bus veered off its path, hit a pedestrian and rammed into three parked cars on the roadside. Local residents quickly gathered and broke the bus window to pull the driver out, while others tried to assist the injured pedestrian.
Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital but were declared brought dead. The deceased pedestrian’s identity has not been confirmed yet.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver had earlier complained of chest discomfort but continued with the duty. Authorities believe the sudden cardiac arrest caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Police have registered a case and sent both bodies for post-mortem. Further investigation is underway to determine if medical checks were conducted before the driver began his shift.
