Chennai New Year: Ahead of New Year celebrations, police have issued strict instructions for star hotels and resorts in Mamallapuram and along Chennai’s East Coast Road (ECR) to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. The coastal stretch is expected to witness heavy tourist inflow on December 31, prompting tighter controls on late-night activities.
Police officials said entertainment programmes will not be allowed beyond 1.00 AM during New Year celebrations. In addition, swimming pools at hotels and resorts must remain closed after 6.00 PM on December 31 to reduce the risk of accidents. Authorities have warned that any violation of these rules will invite strict action against the establishments concerned.
The measures are aimed at preventing mishaps, managing large crowds and ensuring a safe environment for visitors.
In separate news, Metro services on Chennai’s Green Line were disrupted for several hours on Tuesday after a technical fault, causing widespread inconvenience to commuters, especially those travelling towards the Airport. The disruption affected services between Chennai Central and Airport via Anna Nagar and Koyambedu during peak hours.
A senior official from Chennai Metro Rail Limited said a signalling issue on the Green Line led to the suspension of Airport-bound trains from around 9.30 am. Services were not fully restored till late night. Passengers were asked to change trains at Alandur and continue their journey using the Blue Line, resulting in overcrowding and confusion, particularly for those carrying luggage.
Many commuters complained that they were informed about delays only after reaching stations or buying tickets. Though announcements were made, several passengers criticised CMRL on social media for not displaying clear information at stations. Green Line services towards St. Thomas Mount and Blue Line services continued as per schedule.
