Chennai Power Cut Tuesday: Residents in parts of Chennai will experience a power cut on Tuesday, May 27, due to scheduled maintenance work. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has announced that electricity supply will be suspended from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM to carry out essential repair and upgrade tasks.
Kumananchavadi: The affected areas include Ambal Nagar, Poonamallee Bypass Road, Parivakkam, Banaveedu Thottam, Pidarithangal and Kolapancheryy. TANGEDCO has requested residents in these areas to plan accordingly during the temporary disruption.
Power may be restored earlier if the work finishes ahead of time.
In separate news, Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing intense monsoon showers, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several districts. The heavy rainfall has been attributed to the early onset of the southwest monsoon and a developing low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea.
Coimbatore and Nilgiris are among the most affected, with constant rain causing waterlogging in many low-lying parts of Coimbatore. According to IMD, 11 districts are under threat: Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Theni, Tenkasi, and Tiruppur. Hilly areas are particularly vulnerable, with over 200 mm of rain expected in parts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Tirunelveli.
Weather expert Pradeep John has also noted high rainfall activity around the Western Ghats, especially in places like Munnar. These conditions are likely to persist for the next couple of days.
The Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority has stepped up precautionary efforts. Residents in landslide-prone or low-lying areas have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea due to expected strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till May 28, with light showers continuing thereafter.
