Chennai Traffic Advisory For Deepawali: Tambaram Police have announced traffic diversions across Chennai ahead of Deepavali to prevent congestion on major routes. Over 600 officers will manage the festive rush, with diversions in place from October 17–18 and 21–22. Commuters are advised to use OMR, ECR or suburban trains for hassle-free travel.
Anticipating heavy festive traffic during Deepavali, the Tambaram City Police, in coordination with the Greater Chennai and Avadi Police Commissionerates, has announced a series of traffic regulations and diversions. The plan aims to ease congestion on key routes leading to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) and ensure smooth vehicle movement in and out of Chennai.
Chennai News: 600 Police Personnel Deployed For Deepavali Duty
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Tambaram City, Samay Singh Meena, said that extensive arrangements have been made to manage the festive rush. “We will deploy 600 traffic police personnel along with law and order and armed police officers to regulate traffic and prevent congestion,” he stated.
Chennai Traffic Advisory: Diversions From October 17 To 18
From 2 PM onwards on October 17 and 18 (Friday and Saturday), heavy vehicles leaving Chennai and heading towards northern areas, Avadi and beyond will face route diversions:
- Vehicles will be diverted at Poonamallee towards Grand Western Trunk (GWT) Road, continuing via Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai and Thirukovilur to reach Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road.
- Heavy vehicles from Maduravoyal heading towards Tambaram via GST Road must take the Sriperumbudur–Kancheepuram–Thiruvannamalai–Thirukovilur route.
- Vehicles from Kancheepuram (via Walajabad) to Otteri will be diverted at Oragadam Junction to follow the same route.
Chennai Deepawali Traffic Advisory: Return Journey Diversions On October 21 and 22
- On October 21 and 22 (Tuesday and Wednesday), heavy vehicles coming from Chengalpattu towards Chennai will be diverted at Chengalpattu via Kancheepuram Road, Walajabad, Sriperumbudur and Bengaluru NH.
- Similarly, vehicles from Singaperumal will be redirected through Oragadam, Sriperumbudur, and Bengaluru NH, while those stranded near Irumbuliyur Bridge will be diverted via Vandalur Outer Ring Road and Maduravoyal Bypass.
Chennai News: Suburban Trains And Special Buses To Ease Rush
To reduce road traffic, commuters returning after Deepavali are encouraged to use suburban train services from Kattangulathur, Maraimalai Nagar and Potheri stations. Extra trains will run on October 21 and 22 (morning hours).
Additionally, 2,092 special buses will operate daily from KCBT, Kilambakkam, between October 16 and 19, ensuring smooth connectivity for festive travellers.

Chennai Deepawali 2025: Advisory For Travellers
Passengers heading towards Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai are advised to use OMR and ECR routes during both onward and return journeys.
The Chengalpattu Traffic Police has urged motorists to avoid the Chengalpattu route due to ongoing bridge and road expansion works near Pukkathurai and Padalam on GST Road.
Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak appealed to the public to cooperate with traffic regulations and use alternate routes for a safe and convenient Deepavali travel experience.
