Chennai Water Contamination: Two persons died and several others were hospitalised on Thursday due to suspected water contamination in Pallavaram area of Chennai, according to reports. Indian Express Tamil reports that the incident claimed the lives of two persons.
Residents reportedly experienced serious health issues as a result of the incident, which purportedly occurred after drinking water that became contaminated with sewage.
Residents of the 13th ward of Tambaram Corporation's Kamaraj Nagar neighbourhood reported experiencing severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. For treatment, the afflicted people were taken immediately to Chromepet Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) in Lucknow conducted a groundbreaking study that found dangerously high levels of heavy metal contamination in the groundwater in the Leh district of Ladakh. This increased the number of cancer cases in the area over the previous ten years.
Environmental Geochemistry and Health reported the findings, which point to a direct link between a rise in cancer cases and contaminated water.
Water samples from 26 locations in the Leh, Nubra, and Indus-Puga regions—including important towns and villages like Leh, Thikshey, Ayu, Shey, Panamik, and Chumathang—were examined by the research team. Chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and uranium (U) were among the heavy metals examined in samples taken from hand pumps, bore wells, and government water sources.
