Chennai- Vellore Highway: The Tamil Nadu government has announced a plan to build a new six-lane highway connecting Chennai and Vellore. The road, measuring around 142 kilometres, will be developed by the State Highways Department. Officials said the highway will ease congestion on the existing routes and provide faster access to major industrial hubs.
Chennai- Vellore Highway: Linking Key Industrial Corridors
The project is designed to improve connectivity between three major SIPCOT industrial parks at Oragadam, Cheyyar and Vellore district. Once operational, the highway is expected to create a smooth corridor for the movement of goods and industrial traffic. Authorities noted that the new road will also provide an efficient link to Kattupalli and Ennore ports, supporting logistics and cargo movement.
Chennai- Vellore Highway: Impact on Traffic And Connectivity
According to officials, the corridor will significantly reduce congestion on the busy Chennai–Bengaluru National Highway, particularly on the Sriperumbudur–Vellore stretch. The alignment will partly follow the earlier proposed Chennai–Salem Expressway, which was shelved. Motorists travelling from Tambaram and other southern suburbs of Chennai to Arcot and Vellore will benefit from shorter travel time.
Chennai- Vellore Highway: Progress On Land Acquisition
Land acquisition has begun for the 68-km Oragadam–Cheyyar stretch. Authorities said a detailed report for the Oragadam–Cheyyar Industrial Corridor has been completed, which includes upgrading certain state highways into four- or six-lane roads. The highway will also connect with the Vellore–Tiruvannamalai National Highway and the Arcot–Tindivanam State Highway, providing direct access to Arcot through Cheyyar SIPCOT.
Feasibility Study And Extension Plans
The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company has invited tenders for a feasibility study to extend the industrial corridor from Cheyyar SIPCOT up to NH38 in Vellore district. The exact alignment and cost-benefit ratio will be finalised after the study. Officials added that the project is still at an early stage and the location of the planned SIPCOT industrial park along NH38 is yet to be decided.
