Puducherry Weather: Puducherry authorities have directed all departments to remain on maximum alert following the cloudburst incident in Chennai, which caused severe overnight rainfall and disruption. Though the Meteorological Department has predicted only light to moderate showers for Puducherry and Karaikal in the coming days, officials have underlined that cloudbursts cannot be forecast in advance and preparedness is essential.
Puducherry: Emergency Measures In Place
District Collector of Puducherry has instructed every emergency support wing to keep their control rooms active and response teams ready. Departments including Local Bodies, Public Works, Health, Police, Fire and Rescue and the Electricity Board have been asked to stay on standby. Hospitals across the district have been alerted to prepare for possible emergencies, while Fire Services have been directed to remain equipped for swift rescue operations.
Puducherry Weather: Preventive Actions Ordered
The Public Works Department (PWD) has been asked to position motor pumps in low-lying and flood-prone areas to prevent waterlogging. The Information and Publicity Department will carry out awareness drives to warn residents against standing under weak buildings, near trees, poles, or along riverbanks during heavy spells of rain. Police have been told to prepare for traffic management and to ensure law and order in case of flash floods or emergencies.
Chennai Cloudburts
The alert comes a day after North Chennai witnessed an intense cloudburst on Saturday night, with areas like Manali, Wimco Nagar and Korattur recording over 20 cm of rainfall within a few hours. The Regional Meteorological Centre confirmed that Manali alone received more than 230 mm in two hours, meeting the definition of a cloudburst. The downpour forced flight diversions at Chennai airport, with services from Bengaluru, Delhi, France and Mangaluru redirected before being restored once conditions improved.
Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast And Warnings
According to the latest weather bulletin, isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to receive light to moderate rain over the next 24 hours. Gusty winds between 40-50 kmph are also expected in coastal areas. Officials stressed that while Puducherry may not experience extreme rainfall like Chennai, preparations are vital as weather patterns have been increasingly unpredictable.
