Chennai Weather Updates: Tamil Nadu capital Chennai saw intense rainfall overnight, starting late Saturday while the Manali area of the city received torrential rains after a cloudburst. The rainfall data recorded till 8:30 am on August 31 showed severe downpour occurred in Chennai between 10 pm and midnight on Saturday night. According to IMD, the most heavy rainfall was received in Zone 2, Manali (Division 19), with 27 cm, followed by New Manali Town with 26 cm, and Wimco Nagar in Zone 1 with 23 cm.
"Three extremely heavy, 8 very heavy and 28 heavy rainfall events were recorded during the 24-hour ending 8.30 am of August 31, with Manali, New Manali Town and Wimco Nagar recording extremely heavy rainfall of 27 cm, 26 cm and 23 cm, respectively," a bulletin issued by the department said.
Red Alert In Manali Area And Wimco Nagar
The IMD issued a red alert in the Manali area and Wimco Nagar area of Chennai following a cloudburst in these areas. Officials have confirmed that 6 separate rain spells have crossed the 10 cm/hour mark over the area. These markings meet the criteria for a cloudburst as defined by the IMD and the WMO. From 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Saturday, Manali (Division 19) had already recorded 106.2 mm.
Flights Diverted To Bengaluru
Torrential rains in Chennai have forced diversion of three flights towards Bengaluru, including those coming from Frankfurt, Mangaluru and New Delhi. The three flights were unable to land at the Chennai International Airport and had to be diverted to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.
The passengers were later transported back to Chennai on different airplanes as the weather in the city became a little clear.
