Chennai Weather: Chennai is witnessing sizzling temperatures for the past couple of days with multiple locations registering their highest temperatures of the year. Chennai’s Meenambakkam weather observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded so far in 2025. This also marks the highest March 29 temperature recorded in the city since 2000. Madurai recorded its first 40 degrees Celsius of the year, becoming the second location after Vellore to cross this threshold. Much-needed relief may arrive in April with pre-monsoon showers in most regions, including Chennai.
“Rain activity may first start in south TN next week. By April 1 or 2, there could be thunderstorm activity in north TN," said N Senthamarai Kannan, director, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD, as quoted by a TOI report.
The regional meteorological centre has reported that maximum temperatures across the state are 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in several areas. Madurai recorded the highest temperature in Tamil Nadu at 40 degrees Celsius, while other stations in Salem, Vellore, Erode, Karur, and Dharpamuri were also equally hot with over 39 degrees Celsius.
Tamil Nadu Weather: Pre Monsoon Showers From April
A slight drop in maximum temperatures is expected between March 31 and April 2 in some parts of Tamil Nadu. By April 1 and 2, thunderstorms and lightning may occur at isolated places across the state, providing temporary relief from the scorching heat.
“Winds were southerly and the seabreeze was restricted, which led to the temperature rise in the city. Pre-monsoon rains may start from the first week of April in most parts of south peninsular India. Coastal areas may get scattered rainfall. A trough extending from central parts of India to south interior Tamil Nadu will bring the rain," said Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather.
Blogger Pradeep John said weather models show a cyclonic circulation or a low pressure to form near Andaman and may move towards Chennai. "There could be rainfall around April 7-8," he said.
