Chennai Rains: Heavy rains along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are set to grip Chennai today as Cyclone Fengal approaches the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. Chennai and coastal districts are already experiencing heavy rainfall, resulting in waterlogging and disruptions to daily life. Rising tides have prompted further warnings for fishermen and residents in low-lying areas.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry this afternoon, bringing strong winds and potential disruption to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert across the state, urging locals to follow the precautionary measures till the cyclonic storms pass.
On Sunday morning, Chennai recorded a wind speed of 10-18 kmph which is expected to increase rapidly, reaching up to 70 kmph as Cyclone Fengal nears landfall. Cyclone Fengal, currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving north-northwestward at 7 kmph.
Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have implemented precautionary measures to ensure public safety. The Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday for educational institutions, and IT companies have been advised to allow remote work. Public transport along the Eastern Coastal Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road has been suspended.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran reviewed preparedness with officials at the State Emergency Operations Center. The Puducherry Fisheries Department has also urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and to relocate their boats to safer areas.
