The downpour, triggered by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah, eased through the day, giving residents some relief from persistent wet conditions. Forecasters said the city is likely to experience lighter showers on Thursday before clearer skies return.

Tamil Nadu Weather

Despite the declining intensity of rainfall, several northern districts continued to witness heavy showers on Wednesday. Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu recorded intense rainfall due to cloud convergence over the region. The depression in the Bay of Bengal had weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area before crossing the coast near Puducherry on Wednesday morning.

The Times Of India report cited Weather blogger Pradeep John as explaining that the downpours were linked to the interaction of upper and lower atmospheric winds, which caused clouds to remain concentrated over specific districts.

Cyclone Ditwah

Cyclone Ditwah, which had caused widespread destruction in Sri Lanka, did not make direct landfall in Tamil Nadu as initially anticipated. Instead, the system lingered off the coast, leading to prolonged rainfall across Chennai and its northern belt since Monday. Officials confirmed that the system began moving inland on Wednesday and has continued to weaken.

Chennai Waterlogging

Much of Chennai experienced significant waterlogging over the past three days, though improved drainage allowed several areas to clear quickly. Low-lying pockets, however, remain affected. Authorities have intensified pumping operations, helping the city gradually return to normal.
