Chennai Weather: Chennai is expected to see light to moderate rain on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting cloudy skies and temperatures dipping to around 23 degrees Celsius. While no alert has been issued for Thursday, weather conditions are set to change sharply over the next two days as a new system strengthens over the Comorin region and the southwest Bay of Bengal.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area near Sri Lanka is gaining intensity and may develop into a well-marked low on November 26, followed by a depression on November 27. If the system continues to strengthen, it could evolve into Cyclone Senyar, bringing several days of heavy rain and potential disruption to Chennai and nearby coastal districts.
Chennai Weather: Orange Alert Issued
The IMD has already issued an orange alert for Chennai on November 29, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. While some private weather agencies expect moderate rain, the IMD believes the system’s slow movement and moisture build-up could cause intense showers as it tracks north-northwest. On November 30, Chennai is expected to shift to a yellow alert, with rainfall between 6 and 12 cm likely over 24 hours.
Chennai Traffic Amid Possible Flooding
City officials are preparing for possible flooding and traffic disruption, as even moderate rainfall often leads to water stagnation in many neighbourhoods. Motorists have been asked to plan travel carefully and avoid underpasses during peak spells. Areas likely to face congestion or flooding include T. Nagar, Guindy junction, Velachery main road, GST Road, Kodambakkam bridge, parts of the Adyar river stretch, Madhavaram, Perambur bridge and the Koyambedu bus corridor.
Tangedco may carry out precautionary feeder shutdowns in vulnerable zones such as Pallikaranai, Mogappair, KK Nagar and sections of North Chennai to prevent electrical hazards if water levels rise.
Weather bloggers have noted that rainfall may ease over interior districts as the new system moves closer to Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu coast. For Chennai, however, officials urge residents to stay prepared for intense rainfall and related disruptions in the coming days.
