Chennai Weather Today: Incessant downpour over the week in Chennai has caused waterlogging leading to traffic snarl across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in this regard. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 35 degrees Celsius while the minimum will settle at 23 degrees Celsius.
Chennai Weather: Weekly Forecast
From October 21-26, the weather will be dominated by rain and thunderstorms in Chennai. On October 21, temperatures will range from 25 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius, accompanied by thunderstorms activity. This pattern shall continue on October 22 and 23, with similar temperatures and more severe thunderstorm activity. On October 24, the temperature will rise slightly to between 25 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius. Finally, on October 25 and 26, rainfall is expected with temperatures between 26 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius. For the next seven days, the sky is likely to remain partly cloudy. Thunderstorms and lightning with light/moderate rain are likely to occur in some areas.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has reportedly deployed 1,233 motor pumps across the city to address the problems of the residents. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the corporation has proposed to place revamped rain water harvesting structures in 770 locations. As per plan, these will be mostly placed in parks and playgrounds. The total budget of the project is Rs 8.4 crore. Reportedly, 320 structures will be placed in the south region, 200 in the central region and 250 in the north region.
In another update, as per IMD, the low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal will take the form of a cyclone by next Wednesday. As a result, heavy rains are forecast in the coastal districts of West Bengal. Torrential rains may also occur in the neighboring state of Odisha.
Rain activity is expected to start in various districts of Bengal on Tuesday and may continue till Saturday. Fishermen have been prohibited from going to the sea. East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts are likely to receive the most rain.
