Tamil Nadu Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across much of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. Isolated locations may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.

The IMD has also mentioned the likelihood of extreme downpours at select spots, with heavy rain anticipated in several other districts, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, among others. As a result of the ongoing rain, District Collectors in Madurai and Mayiladuthurai have announced school closures for the day.

Schools Closed Amid Heavy Rain Alert

Madurai Collector M.S. Sangeetha and Mayiladuthurai Collector A.P. Mahabharathi confirmed the holidays early on Friday. Additionally, Puducherry’s Education Minister Namachivayam declared that all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal would remain closed due to the adverse weather.

However, the Tiruvallur Collector noted that schools and colleges would operate as usual, although headmasters could decide to close if water stagnation occurred. In southern Tamil Nadu, heavy rains fell on Thursday, causing tourist spots in Kodaikanal to empty as visitors stayed indoors.

School Holiday In Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Karur, Dindigul, Theni And Other

Schools in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts, as well as in Pudukottai and Karur, were also closed due to the weather. In Chennai, schools continued to function, with only light showers reported in the area.

Additionally, Holidays have been declared for schools in Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, as well as for colleges in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.

Warning Issued For Fishermen In Tamil Nadu, Kerala

The IMD has also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea along the Tamil Nadu and Kerala coasts due to rough conditions expected over the next few days. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue on Saturday, with the IMD reporting that a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has stalled over the Gulf of Mannar.

Balachandran, the Deputy Director General from the Chennai Meteorological Department, noted that the past 24 hours saw substantial rainfall, with 72 locations experiencing heavy downpours. The North East monsoon is currently vigorous in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, prompting the IMD to issue a yellow alert for several districts, including Vellore, Salem and Dindigul.
