Chennai Rape: A student of Anna University in Chennai was allegedly raped by two men inside the campus early Wednesday morning. Police stated that the incident occurred after the victim and her male friend attended a midnight Christmas mass at a nearby church. While seated in a secluded campus area, they were assaulted by the accused, who brutally attacked the male friend before dragging the girl to nearby shrubs and raping her.

The victim, a second-year engineering student residing in the campus hostel, had gone for a walk with a fourth-year student. The victim's male companion is also a student at the university. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the campus to determine whether the attackers were outsiders or fellow students.

The Kotturpuram Assistant Commissioner of Police is investigating the case, with an FIR filed under Section 64 of the BNSS Act, which pertains to rape. Police stated that inquiries with the survivor and her friend are ongoing, with further investigations underway.

The incident has sparked outrage, with BJP state president K Annamalai demanding swift action against the perpetrators. He criticised the DMK government, claiming Tamil Nadu has become unsafe for women. ''The state has turned into a haven for criminals as police focus on silencing opposition rather than ensuring public safety,'' he wrote on X.

The Greater Chennai Police, who had deployed over 8,000 personnel for Christmas celebrations, faced backlash for lapses in security.  This incident adds to the criticism of the DMK government’s handling of law and order.

The case came to light when the victim’s father, a single parent, discovered explicit material on her phone. The survivor revealed she had been taken to various lodges and isolated locations by the accused, some of whom she met through a social networking app. Police registered cases under multiple sections, including those addressing the rape of women with disabilities and kidnapping.
