A third-year student at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Naya Raipur has been suspended following complaints of over 30 female students accusing him of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create digitally altered and obscene images of them.
The accused, a resident of Bilaspur and a student in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, allegedly generated morphed photos and videos of female students using AI. Authorities have recovered over 1,000 photos and videos from his possession.
The matter came into light when 36 female students filed a complaint against the accused with the institute on Monday. The college authorities have initiated disciplinary action and are cooperating with further investigation.
Chhattisgarh IT Student Under Investigation
A three-member internal committee comprising women staff has been set up to investigate the incident following the complaint from female students, NDTV quoted Registrar Professor Srinivas as saying.
“On October 6, some women students complained about this. Following this, an investigation committee was formed, and some staff members immediately searched the accused student's room. The student's laptop, mobile phone, and pen drive were confiscated," Srinivas said.
College officials confirmed that over 1,000 photos and videos were female students were found on the accused’s electronic devices, including his laptop, phone, and pen drive. They are now working with the cybercrime experts to determine whether the obscene content was AI-generated and if it was circulated beyond the campus.
“Parents of the complaining students are also being interviewed. Further action is being taken to ensure that no personal information is leaked,” he added.
Police Await Written Complaint To Launch Probe
Ashish Rajput, the officer in charge of the Rakhi Police Station, said that a formal investigation can only begin once a written complaint is submitted by the institute of affected female students.
“We have spoken to the management of the college and are examining the facts. Once a written complaint is received, a formal investigation will begin,” Ashish Rajput said.
The female students have demanded strict action against the accused. In response, college authorities have assured them and their families that appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken against the student.
