Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called a meeting on Wednesday to discuss strategies for the upcoming assembly by-elections. Ministers in charge of the by-elections for all 10 assembly seats will participate, along with one organisational official assigned to each seat. The assembly by-elections are critical for the BJP, especially after its poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Chief Minister Adityanath has taken personal charge of the by-election campaign, aiming to secure victories in all contested seats.
Which Seats Are Up For By-Polls
The assembly seats up for by-election include Katehari, Milkipur, Karhal, Phulpur, Majhawan, Ghaziabad, Meerapur, Kundarki, and Khair, which were vacated after nine MLAs became MPs in the Lok Sabha elections. The Sisamau seat in Kanpur is also vacant due to SP MLA Irfan Solanki's prison sentence. While the SP holds seats like Karhal, Kundarki, Katehari, Milkipur, and Sisamau, the BJP controls Phulpur, Khair, and Ghaziabad. The Meerapur seat is held by NDA ally RLD, and the Majhawan seat by the Nishad Party.
In a recent BJP state working committee meeting, Adityanath set the goal of winning all the by-election seats. Each seat's responsibility has been assigned to three ministers and one organisational officer. At a meeting with assembly seat in-charges and party leaders, state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh discussed the election strategy. The Chief Minister has now called a meeting at his residence.
Ministers Attending The Meeting
Key ministers participating in the meeting include Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, Technical Education Minister Ashish Patel, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna, Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, Minister of State Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh, MSME Minister Rakesh Sachan, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, Labor Minister Anil Rajbhar, Sanjay Nishad, Minister Sunil Sharma, Anil Kumar, Minister of State Somendra Tomar, Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh, Cooperation Minister JPS Rathore, and Sugarcane Development Minister Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan.
BJP’s Lok Sabha Performance
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc, comprising the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, won 43 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP-led NDA secured 36 seats. This marks a significant drop from the NDA's 64 seats in 2019. With by-elections approaching for 10 assembly seats in the state, all eyes are on whether the saffron party can reverse its fortunes.
