DK Shivakumar is finally all set to become Karnataka's chief minister after years of manifestation and hardships for the seat. The 64-year-old political leader will be sworn in as the state's 25th Chief Minister at 3:30 pm on June 3 at the Glass House in the Lok Bhavan.
Reports say that the date was decided by Shivakumar's astrologer, Belur Dwarakanath. The leader chose to take an oath at 4:05 pm. The time was also decided, keeping in mind the availability of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
According to Jagran.com, Priyanka played a key role in the final round of negotiations as the leadership transition process gathered pace. The Congress party decided to keep the ceremony a simple one, given the condition of the country.
Why Is The Congress Conducting A Simple Ceremony?
State Congress working president GC Chandrashekhar said, “We had initially planned to hold the event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha, which would have attracted 15,000 to 20,000 people from different parts of the state, but considering the hardships being faced by people due to inflation and rising fuel prices, we decided not to do so.”
He added, "Shivakumar also insisted that this be a simple event, reflecting the party's commitment to public service. Since it's a working day, we also wanted to avoid any inconvenience to the public."
How Has He Been Elected?
Shivakumar was unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party at a meeting held at the Vidhana Soudha on Saturday. All attention is now focused on cabinet formation. Shivakumar's emergence as a CLP leader marks the first leadership change in 17 years. Siddaramaiah held the position throughout this period.
Siddaramaiah proposed Shivakumar's name at the CLP meeting, while former Home Minister G Parameshwara seconded the proposal. The MLAs then unanimously approved it. Congress General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal later formally announced the decision. Immediately after the meeting, Shivakumar met with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and formally staked claim to form the government.

If negotiations are completed before Tuesday, several ministers would likely take an oath alongside Shivakumar. Chandrashekhar appealed to party workers not to go to the event venue and assured them that Shivakumar would tour the districts to meet with Congress workers and the public.
Following Siddaramaiah's resignation as Chief Minister, the Congress party is attempting to balance caste, community, and regional interests by bringing together various factions within the party. Party insiders say the plan to appoint multiple Deputy Chief Ministers under the "Ahinda" social coalition formula is being reconsidered due to the large number of contenders for the post.
Discussions are also underway regarding key portfolios in the new cabinet, with Siddaramaiah's son Yatindra expected to receive a major responsibility. However, sources say the outgoing Chief Minister is not in favor of including his son in the cabinet.
