In response to the surfacing of two viral video clips on social media, allegedly featuring former Barmer MLA Mewaram Jain in an obscene act, the Congress party suspended him from its membership. The move comes amid the backdrop of Jain facing accusations in a gang rape case, adding complexity to a larger web of allegations involving sexual abuse, sextortion, blackmailing, and money laundering.

Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, in a late-night statement, announced Jain's suspension, citing "immoral activities" as the reason. The case, which has created a political storm, involves Jain and his aide Ramswaroop Acharya, accused by a woman of persistent rape, sexual assault on her teenage daughter and a minor friend, and coercion to procure young girls.

The complainant also alleged false charges filed against her by Jain, Ramswaroop, and six others, including a Rajasthan Police Service officer.

In light of the viral video clips, the BJP launched a scathing attack on the previous Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government. Union Minister Kailash Choudhary commented that protectors had turned into predators under the previous administration, earning the state a dubious distinction as a leader in atrocities against women.

Jain faces charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) for allegedly molesting a woman and raping her minor daughter. Additionally, nine police officials have been charged under POCSO in connection with the case.

The Rajasthan High Court has granted a stay on Jain's arrest until January 22, along with instructions for the police to provide security to the victim.

Mewaram Jain, a former three-term Congress MLA from Barmer, suffered defeat in the recently concluded Rajasthan Assembly elections, losing to an Independent candidate. The suspension reflects the Congress party distancing itself from the serious allegations and the controversy surrounding Jain.
