New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Rajasthan is the fourth worst-hit state from coronavirus in the country and has so far reported over 1,900 cases with 27 deaths. While a massive survey and screening are underway to track the people infected with the deadly virus, the state has stopped usage of rapid testing kits over the alleged discrepancy in results.

Now, in an alarming development, the densely populated Muslim Mochi Mohalla in Ajmer’s Dargah area has emerged as the latest COVID-19 hotspot after having reported 79 cases in the last 24 hours.

These 79 fresh cases, reported from Tuesday night to Wednesday, are from 11-15 houses of the area, according to a Times of India report. The city’s case tally stood at 103 till Wednesday.

The alarming spike has left the authorities in a tizzy as the number of cases were in single digit few days ago. This has prompted the administration to carry out random testing in the Dargah area like it was done in Jaipur’s Ramganj, the report said.

The health department found that all 79 fresh cases were migrant workers living in congested accommodations in the area which has narrow lanes.

Ajmer reported its first positive case on March 28 and four contacts of this person too tested positive in the next 2-3 days.

As per the report, most of the positive patients in the city have been engaged in household works, work as salesmen or in hotels and restaurants. Unconfirmed reports suggest that many of them have been meeting local residents seeking food and other assistance during the lockdown.

A total of 329 samples have been collected from the area, out of which results of around 200 have come and 79 have tested positive. The results of remaining samples are expected by Thursday.

Meanwhile, India's tally of COVID-19 has climbed to over 21,000 cases with the death toll nearing 700-mark. The country remains in a strict lockdown till May 3 to break the chain of transmission of the deadly virus.
