Cyclone Ditwah:  As Cyclone Senyar moved away from the Indian coast, another deep depression system has developed in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that Cyclone Senyar lay 850 km southeast of Car Nicobar, the northernmost island of the Nicobar Islands. It is expected to weaken into a depression by evening.

Senyar moved away from the Indian coast and headed towards Malaysia. 

Cyclone Ditwah: What we know 

The weather department, however, said that another parallel system is building in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of southeast Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean.

"The well marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of southeast Sri Lanka & Equatorial Indian Ocean intensified into a Depression and lay centered at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday, the 26th November 2025 over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Srilanka coast near latitude 5.9°N and longitude 82.6°E, about 170 km east of Hambantota (Sri Lanka) and 210 km south-southeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka)," the IMD said.

It added that the weather system is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm till around 10:15 PM.

"It is very likely to move nearly north-northwestwards across the southwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining Sri Lanka and intensify further into a Deep Depression during next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to intensify further and continue to move north-northwestwards across southwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining Sri Lanka coast towards North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast during subsequent 48 hours," the weather department added.

The IMD said that if the system intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it would be named Cyclone Diwah, as per the roster listing the names of tropical cyclones.

According to the weather department, in the subsequent 48 hours, the cyclonic storm is very likely to further move north-northwestwards across the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast.

Alerts in Tamil Nadu 

Given the effect of the cyclonic storms on the eastern coast of India, the weather department has issued yellow and orange alerts for the Tamil Nadu district.

Among the Tamil Nadu districts, Chennai, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam, among others, are on alert. The alerts have been sounded for heavy rainfall on November 27, 28 and 29.
