Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the partition of the country based on religion is a dark chapter in history and added that the country had to pay a heavy price for it.

Shah also paid tribute to the people who lost their lives during the partition and said that people are still facing the brunt of the menace.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Shah said, "The partition of the country on the basis of religion in 1947 is a dark chapter in history. The hatred it generated has killed lakhs and displaced crores of people. The country had to pay a heavy price for this and many people are still facing the brunt of this menace. Today, on 'Partition Vibhishika Memorial Day', I bow down to all those people who lost their lives and their family members due to partition.”

Since, 2021, the Narendra Modi-led government has been observing August 14 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' to remember those who lost their lives during the partition of the country.

India achieved its freedom on August 15, 1947, and the day is celebrated across the country with pride and immense joy. The partition of the country caused the largest migrations in human history, affecting nearly 20 million people.

Ahead of India’s 77th Independence Day, security has been tightened in the national capital and a Tiranga yatra was taken out on Monday across the country including Leh and Ladakh on the eve of the Independence Day.

Delhi Police have also increased security measures and more than 10,000 security personnel will be deployed for the celebrations when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation.

The Red Fort, where PM Modi will address the nation on the occasion of 77th Independence Day, has been closed to the public from July 26. The area around the Red Fort will be designated as a ‘no kite flying zone’ until the programme concluded.
