The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Delhi is set to undergo a major runway upgrade starting this Sunday. Travelers should prepare for disruptions as one of the airport’s four runways will be closed for three months, resulting in the cancellation and rescheduling of nearly 200 daily flights.
The airport operator (DIAJ) has assured that efforts have been made to minimize disruptions. The company spent weeks coordinating with airlines and aviation authorities to adjust flight slots. This proactive planning aims to avoid a repeat of the widespread chaos caused by weather and runway closure in April, which drew significant public criticism, according to The Indian Express.
Delhi Airport Runway 10/28
Runway 10/28 will be closed until September 15 for a critical technical upgrade. The project will enhance the runway to CAT 3B standard, featuring an advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS) that allows aircraft to land safely in very low visibility conditions. Currently, the runway supports such landings from only one end; the upgrade will enable full capability from both directions.
Flight Cancellations And Rescheduling During Runway Upgrade
According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, airlines will cancel 114 flights daily, with an additional 86 flights being rescheduled. This results in an 8% cancellation rate, higher than the usual 3-3.5 percent daily average, but is a necessary measure to accommodate the runway upgrade works.

The long-term benefits of this project are substantial. Upon completion, IGI Airport will have three runways fully equipped to handle landings even in North India’s dense winter fog. This upgrade will enhance the airport’s resilience and ensure smoother flight operations during the challenging winter months, significantly improving the passenger travel experience.
