The Public Works Department (PWD) has begun the process of constructing a 5.5-kilometer elevated corridor along Sonia Vihar Pusta Road in northeast Delhi. A tender has been issued to conduct a feasibility study for the project. At present, the land is under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.

The tender aims to appoint a consultant to carry out a comprehensive study for the proposed elevated corridor, which will stretch from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-Point to the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border near Tronica City. According to officials, the corridor's route experiences heavy vehicular traffic throughout the day, resulting in frequent congestion during both peak and off-peak hours and creating considerable inconvenience for residents and daily commuters.

Constructing the elevated road is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion along the route. A senior official stated that the corridor will also enhance connectivity between Delhi and the Uttar Pradesh border. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma conducted a site inspection in April and officially announced the project. The estimated cost of the corridor is around ₹500 crore.

Officials noted that the existing space along the central verge will allow for the construction of the elevated road with minimal obstacles or disruptions.

The right-of-way assessment will cover a stretch of six kilometers, beginning at the Nanaksar T-junction. This junction serves as a key node, where six approach roads converge and connect to Pusta Road through a service road.

"There are trees present on both sides of Pusta Road, and there is a Delhi Jal Board pipeline passing underneath. All of this will be part of the feasibility study," the tender stated, according to the TOI report. The Sonia Vihar water treatment plant, operated by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), is located close to the proposed alignment of the elevated corridor.

"Widening of Pusta Road on the city side is not feasible because of space constraints. So, an elevated road will be built," the official said. This project is expected to bring much-needed relief to residents, as the demand for an elevated road had been pending for a long time. To ensure that ground-level traffic remains unaffected during and after construction, pillars will be erected on both sides of the existing road, the official added.

The construction of the elevated road is expected to ease congestion at multiple bottleneck points along the route. Officials stated that the Public Works Department has been directed to fast-track all necessary procedures to begin the project as soon as possible.

The PWD minister earlier said, "The people of Sonia Vihar have been struggling with severe traffic congestion, making this project essential. However, due to the large number of trees in the area, we have now decided to build an elevated flyover instead." Verma stated that the project was initiated following a request from local MLA Kapil Mishra. The proposal was subsequently discussed with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and received her approval.
