A chaos unfolded at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday morning, which led to a delay of over 100 flights amid technical issues with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. The airport authority advised the passengers to keep a check of their flights to avoid any inconvenience. Several flights faced delays of more than 30 minutes, leaving passengers frustrated.

"Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. Their team is actively working with all stakeholders including DIAL to resolve it at the earliest," stated an official statement from the airport authority.

Why Did The Technical Snag Take Place?

According to Jagran.com, the problem at the IGIA was due to an overcrowded parking from aeroplanes. As a result, planes circling for landing in Delhi are facing difficulties. It is believed that diversions will begin shortly to decongest the airport.

“A glitch has been detected in the ATC’s AMS system,” a source was quoted as saying by Jagran.com. The AMS, or the Aeronautical Mobile Service, is a radio communication system for flight safety and airspace management. To mitigate the impact of this technical snag, the ATC has switched the mode of operations from automatic to manual. But this is causing slower aircraft movements and increasing the air traffic congestion at the airport.

Aviation expert Mark Martin described overcrowding of airports as a new challenge for the aviation industry. He further said, “Industry needs to have a backup plan to deal with these potential future challenges. Pilots must be prepared for this.”
