The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is set to undertake large-scale conservation work to preserve Delhi’s historical monuments. In the first phase, 10 monuments in the national capital have been included in the priority list for conservation.

The monuments include Hauz Khas, Jantar Mantar, Agrasen Ki Baoli, the Qutub Minar complex, Safdarjung Tomb, Humayun’s Tomb, Tughlaqabad Fort, the Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, Kotla Firoz Shah and Purana Qila.

While some sites have already seen work begin, the progress is minimal. Tourists will be barred entry to the conservation work areas.

The ASI annually undertakes works like conservation and maintenance at all historical monuments to ensure the structural stability and preservation of old buildings. However, when maintenance works like these are being carried out, tourists are prohibited from entering the specific areas where the conservation or maintenance work is being executed. 

This step will prevent possible damage to Delhi's rich past and prevent risks to tourists.

Conservation Work Planned At 10 Monuments

Structural conservation work is planned at the Hauz Khas and Kotla Firoz Shah complexes. Tourist amenities will be improved at Tughlaqabad Fort and the Tomb of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq.

Accessibility improvements are being carried out at the Qutub Minar complex, while conservation work is underway at the Signal Regiment Building in Salimgarh Fort. Work has also begun at Jantar Mantar and Agrasen Ki Baoli in central Delhi.

At Safdarjung Tomb, conservation work will be carried out on the mosque and its associated chambers. Public facilities will be improved at Humayun’s Tomb.

Delhi Monument Conservation Expenditure

The Delhi division was allocated Rs 19.10 crore in 2021-22, of which almost the entire amount was spent. In 2022-23, the allocation increased to Rs 30.50 crore, with approximately Rs 30.50 crore spent during the year.

In 2023-24, Rs 36.61 crore was allocated, while approximately Rs 36.57 crore was spent on conservation and related works. The allocation fell to Rs 17.85 crore in 2024-25, with approximately Rs 17.85 crore spent.

For 2025-26, Rs 28.70 crore was allocated, of which around Rs 28.67 crore was spent.
