Delhi CM Oath Ceremony: Delhi is expected to get its new chief minister next week, with the oath-taking ceremony of the BJP government likely to take place on February 19 or 20. A meeting of BJP's legislature party is likely to take place on February 17 or 18, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his US visit. Once he comes back, the BJP will appoint the observers for the meeting of the legislature party after which the new government will be formed in the national capital.
"The prime minister is coming back from his foreign visit and soon the observers for a meeting of the BJP legislature party will be appointed," newly elected Rajouri Garden MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa said as quoted by PTI. "The new government will start working around February 19-20," added Sirsa, who is considered a contender for the post of Chief Minister or a ministerial berth.
Sirsa said that once formed the new BJP government in Delhi will prioritise clean drinking water for all, improved civic infrastructure and Yamuna cleaning. "The new government will be formed, I think, by February 20, after the swearing-in ceremony," Sirsa said.
BJP on February 8 registered a thumping win in the Delhi Assembly Election 2025, defeating the ruling AAP with a big margin of seats. The BJP captured 48 seats in the polls, 40 seats up as compared to 2020 polls, while AAP was reduced to 22 seats from its 62 in the last elections.
The BJP leaders have also rubbished reports of internal discord over the chief minister post, terming them mere speculation by the media. Laxmi Nagar MLA Abhay Verma, who is also considered as a prospective candidate for the CM post, said, "There is no race for the post of Delhi chief minister. In our party, the CM or the leader of the legislature party is elected in a meeting of the MLAs."
"We have come to serve the people and now thinking about addressing issues like development, clean water supply and clean air for the people as well as how to free the Yamuna from pollution," he added.
Who Will Be Delhi CM?
The BJP is expected to start brainstorming sessions over the Delhi CM pick once PM Modi returns from his foreign visits. Several names have been doing the rounds since the BJP came to power. Media reports have also indicated that the BJP may throw a surprise and name a woman chief minister for the national capital. Among the top contenders is Parvesh Verma, the son of former Delhi CM Saheb Singh Verma.
Parvesh Verma defeated AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, which was the biggest setback in AAP's loss. Verma won by a margin of over 4,000 votes against Kejriwal. Other front runners for the CM post include former Delhi BJP chief and Malviya Nagar MLA Satish Upadhyay, senior party leader Vijender Gupta, newly elected Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood and Uttam Nagar MLA Pawan Sharma.
Meanwhile, four female BJP leaders have been elected as MLAs in Delhi. These include Neelam Pahalwan who won from the Najafgarh Assembly constituency, Rekha Gupta who won from Shalimar Bagh seat, Poonam Sharma who won the Wazirpur seat and Shikha Roy, who defeated AAP bigwig and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj from the Greater Kailash seat.
