In a surprising incident, Deep Shubham, a chemistry graduate from Kirori Mal College, was arrested for carrying out bank robberies in Delhi and Bihar. Shubham said that his family’s financial problems pushed him into crime.

Earlier this week, Delhi Police Head Constable Ajay got information that Shubham was seen in Haryana’s Sohna district. With the use of technical surveillance, police tracked and arrested Shubham in connection with the bank robberies in Delhi and Bihar in 2017 and 2021, news agency PTI reported.

Why Did Chemistry Graduate Turn to Crime?

According to the police, 32-year-old Deep Shubham, hailing from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, was working with an interior designing firm. He completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Chemistry from Delhi’s prestigious Kirori Mal College, and went on to earn the advanced degree of MPhil. His explanation has raised speculations, given his strong educational background and the possibility of finding work.

First Heist With Homemade Smoke Bomb

According to police officials, Deep’s first-known robbery took place in 2017. He used his chemistry knowledge to create a homemade smoke bomb with firecrackers, methyl acetate, and benzene. He used the homemade smoke bomb to rob the Bank of India branch in Bihar’s Siramarhi, looting Rs 3.6 lakh in cash. Following the incident, Shubham was arrested and convicted of the crime.

He partnered with another criminal, Ritesh Thakur, and together they carried out armed robberies at two banks in Delhi’s Gujranwala area in September and October 2021. During the heist, they stole jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh and several mobile phones.

Shubham was declared a proclaimed offender, and the police had been actively looking for him. He was arrested last week. Harsh Indora, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), said, “Deep chose the path of crime despite being highly qualified, and now he has ended up where a criminal belongs.”
