Delhi Election 2025: All 700 markets in Delhi will remain closed on February 5, the polling day for the Delhi Assembly Election, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) announced on Thursday. Most markets will be shut, some retail sector shopkeepers may reopen their stores in the evening after casting their votes.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal emphasised that traders must comply with the Election Commission and Labour Department’s directives. He clarified that if any shop or factory operates on polling day, employees must be granted paid leave, and no salary deductions should be made.
The voting will be held on all 70 seats of the national capital in a single phase on February 5. The counting of votes will take place on February 8, and Delhi will get its new government.
In its statement, CTI directed all market associations and business establishments to ensure their shops remain shut on polling day. Industrial areas will also observe a holiday.
CTI General Secretary Gurmeet Arora highlighted that the Delhi government has issued directives requiring all business establishments, including shops, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and industrial units, to grant employees leave on February 5 without any salary deductions.
The Labour Department has also issued an order under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, ensuring that all employees in any profession, trade, or industrial undertaking are entitled to a holiday for voting. Additionally, emergency service employees have been advised to report to work only after casting their votes.
