The Congress party on Friday declared Alka Lamba as its candidate for the Kalkaji constituency in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. A former member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Lamba is set to challenge the current Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi in a fiercely contested race.

“The Central Election Committee has approved the candidature of Alka Lamba as Congress candidate to contest the forthcoming general election to the Legislative Assembly of Delhi from 51 – Kalkaji constituency,” said the release issued by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Lamba expressed gratitude towards the party for giving her the opportunity to contest against Delhi CM Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Lamba said, "I thank the party for this opportunity. I am going to contest the Vidhan Sabha elections for the 4th time... First, it should be decided if she is a CM or a temporary CM. Former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal called her a temporary CM. He has insulted the constitutional post and a woman sitting on that post... My fight is against the hazardous air, polluted Yamuna and crime in Delhi..."

The Kalkaji constituency is widely considered a stronghold of the AAP. Atishi, who assumed the role of Chief Minister in September 2024 after Arvind Kejriwal's resignation, has been a key figure in the party. She has represented this seat since 2015, solidifying her prominence in the region.

Lamba, currently serving as the president of the All India Mahila Congress, is a former leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She has represented the Chandni Chowk constituency as a legislator. After resigning from AAP in 2019, citing disrespect within the party, she rejoined Congress. Notably, she has also contested against Arvind Kejriwal in the past, however, she was not able to defeat him.

The Congress has so far announced 48 candidates for the upcoming Delhi elections, which are expected to take place in February 2025. While the current Delhi Assembly's term is scheduled to conclude on February 23, 2025, the Election Commission of India has yet to release the official election dates.
