The Delhi Police has gunned down four of the most wanted criminals of the Sigma and Company gang, who were wanted in five criminal cases, including four contract killings in Bihar.

The criminals were killed in a joint operation of the Delhi and Bihar police teams, who intercepted a Baleno car with a fake registration plate.

The car was moving from Ambedkar Chowk towards Pansali Chowk on Bahadur Shah Marg when it was tracked for suspicious movement in the city, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Surender Kumar said while sharing details of the shootout at the Delhi Police headquarters.

The accused allegedly opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory action that left all four injured, the officer said. They were taken to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

The police said that about 25 to 30 rounds were fired from the accused's side, while the police fired around 15 to 20 shots, news agency PTI reported.

A senior police official said that they were planning to carry out criminal activities in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections.

Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar said, "The gang was committing crimes almost every month. They were contract killers...They had named their gang 'Sigma and Company,' and that itself indicates their intentions. Elections are about to be held in Bihar. We made a significant effort to gather information on this gang".

Who were the four most wanted criminals?

The criminals killed in the encounter were Ranjan Pathak, BimleshMahto (25), Manish Pathak (33), and Aman Thakur (21).

Pathak wasthe kingpin of the gang and carried a bounty of Rs 50,000. He belonged to Bihar's Sitamarhi district. The police described him as a dreaded criminal who, in the last three months, was involved in five cases, including four for extortion-cum-murder.

In the most recent case on October 13, he demanded extortion money from a man and threatened him with life. The call was made after the model code of conduct (MCC) came into effect for the elections.

Apart from Aman Thakur, was belonged to Delhi, all were from Bihar. Along with Ranjan, they too had a history of cases related to extortion and murder against them.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, they were facing cases in Bihar's Dumra, Chaurat, Gahra and Purnahiya.

News agency ANI reported, the gang was allegedly involved in the killings of Brahmashri Sena district head Ganesh Sharma, Madan Sharma, and Aditya Singh in Bihar.
