Delhi News: Delhi Police have arrested a man and his son after a video showing celebratory firing during Diwali went viral on Instagram. The incident took place in the Shastri Nagar area, where the 22-year-old son was seen firing gunshots into the air.

According to officials, the pistol used in the video was registered in the name of the accused’s father, whose firearm licence had expired earlier. The father, identified as Mukesh Kumar, 42, runs a catering and sweets business, while his son has been identified as Sumit Kumar. Both have been booked under the Arms Act.

North District Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Raja Banthia said the Anti-Narcotics Cell team received a tip-off on October 30 about a viral video showing a young man firing a pistol in the air. The team traced the suspect to his shop in Shastri Nagar and detained him.

During interrogation, Sumit reportedly confessed to recording the video on Diwali night to gain popularity on social media. He admitted to taking his father’s pistol from a drawer at home and firing two rounds in the air before uploading the video to Instagram. The clip quickly spread online.

Police later found that Mukesh’s firearm licence had expired on October 1. Following this discovery, he was also arrested. The weapon has been seized from their residence.

Officials stated that a case has been registered for endangering human life and violating firearm regulations. Police also cautioned against the growing misuse of social media for stunts that compromise public safety.
