Diwali is going to be even more special for the traders of Delhi this year as the Delhi government has decided to transfer the pending GST refund of about Rs 1,600 crore directly into their accounts before the festival.
The refund was pending since 2019, making the announcement a major relief for traders. The announcement is also a strong signal of giving new impetus to the economic progress of Delhi.
The businesses were making appeals to the Delhi government for a long time, but it never fructified for one reason or the other. However, this time, the Rekha Gupta government decided to release the huge amount stuck which was affecting the business.
This amount will not only provide financial relief to the traders but will also help make their festival more joyful.
To make the refund process faster and transparent, the government has resorted to technology. A new IT system has been developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, which will make the processing of refund applications more efficient and transparent.
Through this system, every application will be resolved quickly and correctly, so that traders will not have to face unnecessary delays or problems. This step will not only improve the administrative process but will also increase the trust of traders towards the government.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took to X and said, "This year, before Diwali, our government is set to deliver a major gift to Delhi's traders. The pending GST refund of approximately ₹1600 crore, outstanding since 2019, will soon reach the traders' accounts."

She accused the Aam Aadmi Party government for not paying heed to the traders' demands. She said, "It is unfortunate that the previous government took no steps to return this rightful entitlement, leaving the traders' hard-earned capital stuck for years."
"Our government has decided that this entire refund will be disbursed before Diwali, so that our trader brothers and sisters can celebrate the festival with even greater prosperity", she added.
