Delhi Transport Department issued an order to ban BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel cars in the city, effective from today. The order comes after the implementation of GRAP-3 guidelines, which aim to reduce the deteriorating air pollution levels in Delhi.
According to the order, any BS-3 petrol or BS-4 diesel four-wheeler found running on the roads will be fined Rs 20,000. The ban affects 2,07,038 BS-3 petrol and 3,09,225 BS-4 diesel cars registered in Delhi. The Transport Department has deployed 114 teams to enforce the ban and take action against the violators.
However, the ban does not apply to vehicles deployed for emergency services and vehicles engaged in government work. These vehicles are exempted from the ban and can continue to operate in Delhi.
''As per directions as provided under Stage- III of the revised GRAP and under Section 115 of Motors Vehicle Act, 1988, it is hereby ordered that there shall be restrictions to ply, BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel LMVs (4 wheelers) in NCT of Delhi with immediate effect till further orders (except for vehicles deployed in Emergency services, police vehicles & Govt. vehicles used for Enforcement),'' the order stated.
''If any BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel LMVs (4 wheeler) found plying on road will be prosecuted under section 194 (1) of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 which provides with a fine of Rs 20,000,'' the order further read.
The reason for imposing the ban is to reduce vehicular emissions, which contribute to about 40 per cent of the total pollution in Delhi, according to a study. The Commission for Air Quality Management also directed to promote public vehicles running on electric and CNG in Delhi and the NCR region, as part of the measures to improve the air quality.
