In a big relief to people with their pending water bills, the Delhi Government on Thursday announced that a ‘One Time Settlement’ scheme would soon be launched, which will offer a discount on payment of the outstanding balance.
Delhi PWD and Water Resources Minister Pravesh Verma announced this decision during a press conference. Verma said the government will not suspend connections till the scheme is launched. Besides, a one-time bill waiver scheme will be available for consumers to take advantage of.
He said the software of the water board was being updated to accommodate the scheme and it is expected that this process will be completed in two months. A proposal is likely to be brought in this regard in the next board meeting. The old software of the Delhi Jal Board is being updated, so that the billing system is improved and consumers get relief from wrong billing.
Several other key decisions have also been made in the meeting of the Delhi Jal Board. The Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant upgradation project has been approved, which will be done with the help of ADB to provide a better water supply to over 30 lakh people. Minister Verma said this agreement was made in 2013 and a fund of Rs 2,433 crores was to be received, but the previous government failed to implement it.
The proposal has been sent to the Centre for approval and the upgradation work is expected to start in 6-7 months. The cost of the project has now been increased to Rs 3715 crore.
Approval has also been given to lay sewer lines in Sonia Vihar and Hasanpur, which will be completed in 12 and 15 months, respectively. It will cost around Rs 51 crore.
As many as 131 new engineers will also be recruited to overcome the shortage. Retired engineers from the Centre, State and Public Sector will be recruited.
