A 32-year-old man admitted to GTB Hospital in Dilshad Garden for more than a month was shot dead on Sunday afternoon, reportedly by an 18-year-old who barged into the ward while other patients, the doctor on duty, and attendants watched in fear, according to police.

The accused reportedly aimed his pistol at the doctor and the deceased's sister before fleeing the scene, authorities said.

Police said the incident looked to be a case of mistaken identification since the accused intended to kill another guy admitted to a separate ward.

The deceased was identified as Riyazuddin, a Khajuri Khas native who was brought on June 23 for treatment for an intestinal illness. He died as a result of about three gunshot injuries to his belly.

According to sources cited by Dainik Jagran, the accused entered the surgical unit through the emergency room. The culprit, dressed in a red T-shirt and half trousers, fired rounds at the patient. There were no cameras at the scene of the event, but a CCTV camera was put above the ward's main entrance. The miscreants were caught in it while fleeing.

On Monday, the police received a post-mortem report of Riyazuddin's body. Meanwhile, police have identified the three criminals. The perpetrators are reported to be juveniles, thus the authorities have not released their names. Shahdara and North East District Police are looking for the perpetrators.
